The Mission of Saint Matthew Church of Christ Holiness
Pastor Quincy Gardiner preached his first sermon on Father's Day in 1996. He spent seven years teaching middle school, gave his entire paycheck to plant this ministry, served as chaplain at Vanderbilt and Meharry Hospitals, and walked with families through domestic violence and addiction in Monroe — and he has never once stopped showing up.
Pastor Gardiner will tell you God did all of that. The people whose lives were changed will tell you he did too.
Every church has a history. Not every church has a story. Saint Matthew has a story — and it is still being written every Sunday morning in Monroe.
Saint Matthew Church of Christ Holiness was built on a conviction that this community needed a place where ordinary people could encounter an extraordinary God. Not a program. Not a performance. A genuine community of faith that takes seriously the call to love God and love people.
That conviction has not changed since 1996. The community has grown. The ministry has expanded. But the heart of Saint Matthew remains exactly what it has always been — a house of hope in the city of Monroe.
"There is a void of hope in Monroe that Saint Matthew exists to fill. That is not arrogance. That is a calling."
He has never stopped.
Pastor Quincy Gardiner preached his first sermon on Father's Day in 1996. He was not yet ordained. He was not yet licensed. But he showed up and gave what he had — and that has been his operating principle every year since.
Before ministry consumed his life completely, Pastor Gardiner spent seven years teaching middle school. He gave his entire paycheck to plant this ministry as a quiet act of faith that the work was worth the cost. It was.
He has served as chaplain at Vanderbilt and Meharry Hospitals in Nashville, walked with families through domestic violence and addiction, planted churches, and mentored a generation of ministers in Monroe and beyond.
Pastor Gardiner will tell you God did all of that. The people whose lives were changed will tell you he did too. The truth is somewhere between those two things — and that is exactly where he would want it to be.
That sentence is not a tagline. It is the standard we hold ourselves to every Sunday morning in Monroe, Louisiana.
Saint Matthew has always believed the church's responsibility does not end at the sanctuary doors.
From Sunday morning worship to weekday outreach, there is a place for every person at Saint Matthew to belong and to serve. The church does not end when the service ends.
Celebrate Recovery is a Christ-centered program that has helped millions find freedom from hurts, hang-ups, and habits. Saint Matthew hosts Celebrate Recovery openly — because healing should never require a membership.
